How do I talk without turning every issue into a fight?

Asked by Man, 27

We cannot discuss dishes without a trial. I shut down. She says I do not care.

Men’s answer

Shutdown is a strategy, not a personality. It still lands as abandonment. Try time-limited talks: twenty minutes, one issue, no character analysis. If your body is gone, say 'I am flooded, I need thirty minutes, I will come back.' Then come back. Coming back is the whole skill.

Women’s answer

When men go quiet we often hear 'you are too much.' We turn up the volume to get a pulse. That makes the quiet worse. Agree a pause word. Use it. The fight is often about whether anyone is still in the room, not about the dishes.

What to do next

Pick a pause word this week. Practice it on a small irritation. If either of you uses the pause to disappear until morning, that is the next conversation.
