Ask Men Breakups
Do no-contact rules actually help after a breakup?
Asked by Man, 27
People say 30 days. I want to be mature and still be friends.
Men’s answer
From the men
Friendship is a later skill. In the first month it is usually a way to keep a little of the drug. No contact is not a punishment. It is how your brain stops waiting for a sequel. If you cannot do 30 days, you are not ready to be friends. You are ready to hover.
Women’s answer
From the women
We can smell the friendship offer that is actually a lobby. If you want us, say that later, after you have a life that is not organized around our reply. Maturity is not staying in the group chat. Maturity is leaving us alone long enough to become someone else.
What to do next
Mute, archive, no 'checking she got home' texts. Reassess friendship only after the wanting is dull.
