I hear “just talk to her,” but in bars and on apps it still feels like men are expected to make the first move. Do women ever start it, or is that a myth men tell themselves?
Some do. Most won’t in a cold room full of strangers, because the social cost of a “no” is still higher for them than it is for you. If you only wait for a walk-up approach, you will wait a long time. What you will see, if you are paying attention, is a softer open: she holds the door, she laughs too long, she finds a reason to stand near you. That is an approach. Treat it like one.
Yes. We just rarely do it the way movies taught you. A lot of us will not walk up and say “you’re cute, here’s my number” unless the space feels safe. We will talk to your friend first, ask what you’re drinking, or text first after a match. If you need it to look like a Hollywood tap on the shoulder, you will miss the ones who already tried.
Stop counting only the dramatic walk-ups. If someone makes it easy to talk to them, answer it. And if you want more of that, be the kind of person it is low-risk to approach.
