Ask Both Breakups
How do I know if I miss them or just the routine?
Asked by Man, 32
Sunday mornings hurt. I cannot tell if it is her or the coffee-for-two habit.
Men’s answer
From the men
Routine grief is real and it fools people into reunions. Ask whether you miss this specific person's mind, or the shape of not being alone. If a generic kind roommate would soothe half of it, it is the habit. If only their particular laugh would do, that is them. Either way, missing is not a plan.
Women’s answer
From the women
You can miss the dog, the sofa, and the person in different ratios. List what you actually replay. If it is logistics and warmth, you are lonely. If it is their specific way of seeing you, that is a different ache. Loneliness gets treated with life. The specific ache gets treated with time, not a text.
What to do next
Write two lists: 'I miss the person' and 'I miss the life.' If the second is longer, build the life without them.
